Premarital Health Screening

Why Premarital Health Screening Matters

Your health is the foundation of everything you do. A premarital health screening is an act of self-care, ensuring that both you and your partner enter this new phase with transparency and assurance.

From understanding hereditary risks to screening for common conditions, this process lays the groundwork for a healthier tomorrow—for you, your partner, and the family you may choose to create.

Who Should Go for a Premarital Health Screening?

Premarital health screening is highly recommended for all couples planning to get married, especially if you:

1

Plan to Start a Family

Screening helps identify potential genetic conditions (e.g., Thalassaemia) or infections that may affect the health of future children.

2

Have a Family History of Genetic Disorders

Couples with a family history of conditions like Thalassaemia or other inherited disorders should consider screening to assess risks for their offspring.

3

Want to Prevent Transmission of Infections

Identifying sexually transmitted infections (e.g., HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia) ensures timely treatment, protecting your partner and future children.

4

Wish to Address Reproductive Health Concerns

Screening for conditions like Rubella, which can affect pregnancy outcomes, ensures proper vaccination and preparation before conception.

Premarital screenings help you and your partner build a healthy foundation for marriage, improve reproductive planning, and safeguard your individual and combined well-being.

Premarital Health Screening Options

Our premarital screening ($110) includes:

  • Full blood count
  • Hb Electrophoresis
  • ABO Blood Group
  • Hepatitis B Antigen & Antibody
  • HIV Ag/Ab Screen
  • Syphilis Screening
  • Rubella IgG Antibody

If keen to test for STIs, you may add on chlamydia and gonorrhea PCR screening for $150.

For most couples, you can expect to be tested for:

  • Blood tests: Identify conditions like anaemia and infectious diseases (hepatitis B, HIV).
  • Genetic testing: Screen for inheritable conditions such as Thalassaemia.
  • STD testing and screenings: Detect sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea).
  • Immunity checks: Assess immunity to Rubella, which is critical for women planning pregnancies.

Important Conditions to Screen For

Thalassaemia (Genetic Blood Disorder)

If both parents are Thalassaemia carriers (Thal trait/minor), there is a 25% chance of having a child with Thalassaemia major. This severe form of anaemia often requires lifelong blood transfusions and may lead to reduced life expectancy.

Screening for Thalassaemia is essential to assess potential risks for future pregnancies.

HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis

These infections are sexually transmitted and can be passed from mother to baby, resulting in severe health complications for the child. Early detection is crucial.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea

Both are common sexually transmitted infections that often show no symptoms, especially in women. If left untreated, these infections can cause chronic scarring of the fallopian tubes, impacting implantation and increasing the risk of infertility.

Rubella

Rubella is a highly contagious virus that can increase the risk of congenital abnormalities, miscarriage, or stillbirth. If rubella antibodies are undetectable, vaccination before pregnancy is necessary to ensure protection for both the mother and baby.

As the rubella vaccine is a liver vaccine, women should avoid getting pregnant 4 weeks (28 days) after the MMR vaccination.

Regular screenings and timely vaccinations safeguard your fertility and reproductive health while ensuring a strong foundation for marriage and family planning.

Are Fertility Tests and STD Screenings the Same as Premarital Health Screenings?

A premarital health screening is not the same as a fertility test or STD screening. While there may be overlaps between a STD screening and premarital health screening, the latter includes specific tests that detect genetic, infectious, and chronic diseases that could affect future family planning and reproductive health.

Likewise, fertility screenings serve to provide a deeper understanding of your reproductive health. If having children soon is a priority, a fertility test may be helpful alongside a premarital health screening to ensure your partner and yourself are in good reproductive health.

Please note that our medical tests do not include marriage counselling services.

Screen Early: Knowledge is Power

Taking control of your health now is a gift to yourself and your partner. Early health awareness helps you address potential issues before they escalate, whether it’s a genetic risk or an undiagnosed condition.

Screening also opens up important conversations—about hereditary health, reproductive plans, and even lifestyle habits.

At Prologue The Lifestyle Medical Clinic, we are dedicated to providing compassionate, personalised care to support your health at every stage of life. As a CHAS and Healthier SG Clinic, we strive to make high-quality care accessible with available subsidies for eligible patients.
