Understanding Vaccinations in Singapore

Vaccinations in Singapore are regulated by the Ministry of Health (MOH) through the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) and the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS).

The NCIS outlines several vaccinations that children should receive as early life protection up until they are 18 years old. Some of these are mandated by law, such as two doses of the MMR vaccine to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella.

On the other hand, the NAIS highlights recommended vaccines that adults can receive to maintain strong immune protection throughout different life stages. These may include vaccines for influenza, Hepatitis B, pneumococcal disease, and more.

Vaccination Subsidies in Singapore

Wishing to get vaccinated, yet worried about the cost? You may be eligible for vaccine subsidies through CHAS clinics near you.

By getting vaccinated, you’re not only protecting yourself, but you’re also helping to protect those around you through herd immunity.

Influenza Vaccine

Take action to protect yourself and the people you care about most. Explore our list of vaccination services:

Influenza Vaccine

If you’ve ever contracted flu, you know it’s more than just a bad cold. High fevers, body aches, and exhaustion that took you out for days are all parts of the unpleasant experience.

Influenza A and B viruses are responsible for causing the flu. It spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, or touching shared surfaces. Young kids, older adults, and people with respiratory conditions are more prone to serious complications from the viruses.

That’s why an annual influenza vaccine or flu shot is recommended. It helps the body build immunity against the virus, keeping you and your loved ones protected.

In Singapore, the influenza vaccine is subsidised under the Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS), making it more accessible for people of all ages.

Hepatitis A Vaccine

Severe fatigue, stomach pain, and nausea, followed by jaundice or yellowing of the skin and eyes shouldn’t be taken lightly. These symptoms often indicate Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) infection, which primarily affects the liver.

The virus spreads through ingestion of food or water contaminated with faecal matter or close contact with an infected person. Individuals aged over 50 and those with existing liver conditions are at higher risk of developing severe cases.

Getting the Hepatitis A vaccine can help build immunity against the virus. Children are recommended to receive it between the age of 12 to 23 months, with a second dose given at least 6 months after the first.

If you’re an adult who has yet to receive the Hepatitis A vaccine, you should get vaccinated, especially if you’re in a high-risk group. Depending on your age, you may need two or three doses, or a combination with the Hepatitis B vaccine for full protection.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Did you know that Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most common hepatitis virus in Singapore? It’s estimated that 6% of the local populations are Hepatitis B carriers, many of whom may not even know they are infected due to the lack of symptoms in the early stages.

Recognising the serious complications Hepatitis B virus can bring to the liver, it’s always better to prevent than to treat. Getting vaccinated is a safe and effective way to protect yourself and the people around you.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is given at three doses over six months (month 0, 1, and 6) with common brands including Engerix-B and Recombivax HB. In some cases, our doctor may recommend combination vaccines to help you build immunity against HBV and other diseases.

Under Singapore’s National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS), you may be eligible for subsidised Hepatitis B vaccinations.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Pneumonia might sound just like another respiratory infection. But in fact, it’s the second leading cause of death in Singapore, claiming over 5,000 lives annually. It spreads quickly through droplets from sneezes or coughs from an infected person.

The bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common cause of pneumonia, and it can also lead to other serious infections like meningitis and sepsis. Getting the pneumococcal vaccine is an effective way to safeguard yourself and the people around you against these potentially life-threatening infections.

There are three types of Pneumococcal vaccines in Singapore, namely PCV13, PCV20, and PPSV23. PCV13 and PPSV23 are the most commonly used, protecting against 13 and 23 common strains of pneumococcal bacteria, respectively.

Through pre-vaccination consultation, we ensure that you receive the most suitable Pneumococcal vaccine. You or your loved ones may receive PCV13, PCV20 or PPSV23 depending on age and medical condition.

Eligible patients can also receive subsidies for pneumococcal vaccination under the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS), making protection against pneumonia more accessible.

HPV Vaccine

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a viral infection that spreads through intimate contact, such as sexual activity. Though the majority of HPV infections go away on their own, exposure to some strains of HPV may lead to cervical cancer.

Vaccinations and regular cervical cancer screening (pap smear) can help prevent and identify cervical cancer early. Girls can start receiving the vaccine from age 9, and women up to 45 years old are encouraged to get vaccinated if they haven’t already, to reduce their risk of cervical cancer and HPV-related conditions.

There are two types of HPV vaccines, Cervarix and Gardasil 9. Cervarix helps protect against 2 HPV strains, while Gardasil 9 offers protection against 9 HPV strains.

At Prologue, we offer the Gardasil 9 vaccine, which provides protection against 9 HPV strains. The vaccine is typically administered in a series of three doses—at months 0, 2, and 6. When given before exposure to the virus, HPV vaccination is highly effective in preventing cervical cancer and other HPV-related conditions.

Shingrix Vaccine

Did you know that your risk of shingles goes up as you age? It’s caused by the same virus as chickenpox—known as varicella-zoster virus (VZV)—and even if you had chickenpox years ago, the virus never really leaves. Once you hit 50, your immune system may weaken, increasing the likelihood of virus reactivation.

The good news is, Shingrix vaccine offers the protection at efficacy rates exceeding 90%. Administered in two doses, the Shingrix vaccine provides long-lasting immunity for up to 10 years.

By getting vaccinated, you can prevent debilitating symptoms or complications from Shingles that can drastically impact your quality of life. Taking the action now means you can stay active, independent, and protect your overall well-being for the years to come.

MMR Vaccine

Measles, mumps, and rubella are highly contagious viral infections, each can lead to serious complications in adults and vulnerable people such as pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

So why take the risk when a safe and effective vaccine is available? The MMR vaccine, or commercially known as M-M-R® II, can help build immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella in children and adults.

All children in Singapore are required by law to receive two doses of the MMR vaccine—the first at 12 months of age, and the second dose at least 4 weeks later.

For adults, the case can vary. The MMR vaccine is strongly recommended under the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS) if you didn’t receive a complete dose during childhood, lack official vaccination records, or work in high-risk environments such as healthcare or education.

If that sounds like you, our doctors are here to provide personalised consultation, and can perform a simple antibody blood test (MMR IgG) to check your immunity levels before administering the MMR vaccine.
